Potentiometric determination of transport numbers of ternary electrolyte systems in charged membranes
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the potentiometric determination of transport numbers of ternary electrolyte systems in charged membranes. Expressions are obtained to evaluate the transport numbers close to equilibrium conditions. The apparent potentiometric transport number is studied as well as the conditions that make it reliable for the estimation of the membrane fixed charge concentration. Results indicate that the interpretation of ion transport data in terms of the binary system equations can be an erroneous procedure.

Coupling analysis of probe diffusion in high molecular weight hydroxypropylcellulose
Article Abstract:
The light scattering spectra of mesoscopic probes in 1 MDa hydroxypropylcellulose (HPC): water have been studied by using the coupling/scaling model of Ngai and Phillies. The spectra of probe:polymer mixtures and probe-free solutions have been measured and the polymer spectrum is then subtracted from the probe:polymer spectrum. Results indicated that polymer scattering had no significant influence on probe spectra. The line shape parameters were not altered significantly by the polymer modes.

Formation of stable Ag-nanoparticle aggregates induced by dithiol cross-linking
Article Abstract:
Dynamic light scattering is used to study the aggregation of thiol-stabilized silver nanoparticles induced by 1,6-hexane dithiol. The growth kinetics are shown to be linked to the dynamics of the thiol-exchange reaction and a model is developed for the aggregation process on the basis of a simple diffusion-kinetic approach assuming an elementary kinetic reaction at the surfaces and a spherical diffusion field surrounding the aggregates.
