Preparation of novel saw-toothed and riblike alpha-Si3N4

Article Abstract:

Carbothermal reduction and nitridation route is used to synthesize alpha-Si3N4 whiskers with saw-toothed and riblike structures. The characterization results show that the saw-toothed whiskers with one smooth and another toothlike surface have lengths of about several tens microns and great widths, the riblike whiskers are composed of Si3N4 rod-arrays and photoluminescence of whiskers shows a strong blue light emission suggesting their potential in light and electron devices.

Control of the stability, electron-transfer kinetics, and pH-dependent energetics of Si/[H.sub.2]O interfaces through methyl termination of Si(111) surfaces

Article Abstract:

The covalent modification of Si surfaces through a two-step chlorination-methylation method is described to introduce kinetically stable C[H.sub.3]-Si bonds onto Si(111) surfaces. The results have provided strong evidence that the energetics of chemically modified Si interfaces can be fixed with respect to pH and have shown that the band-edge energies of Si can be tuned independently of pH-derived variations in the electrochemical potential of the solution redox species.

Measurement and DFT calculation of Fe[(cp).sub.2] redox potential in molecular monolayers covalently to H-Si(100)

Article Abstract:

The density functional theory (DFT) ab initio calculation of Fe-silicon hybrid redox potentials is reported. It is suggested that the hydrosilylation activated by visible light proceeds through a mechanism, which is not yet described, thus indicating that saturations are preserved during the addition.
