Scanning electrochemical microscopy: measurement of the current density at microscopic redox-active sites on titanium

Article Abstract:

A study was conducted to obtain the absolute value of the current density at microscopic electroactive sites on polycrystalline titanium electrodes by a scanning electrochemical microscope. The aqueous solutions were prepared using 18 M-ohm cm water from a Barnstead E-pure purification system while gold and platinum micodisk electrodes were obtained by utilizing platinum wires and a gold wire. Results indicated the effectiveness of scanning electrochemical microscopy in determining microscopic current distributions at large area electrodes.

Voltammetric measurement of interfacial acid/base reactions

Article Abstract:

A study was performed to explain the cyclic voltammetric measurements of a silver(111) (Ag(111)) electrode coated with a blended monolayer of 11-mercaptoundecanoic and a 1-decanethiol and show that a reversible voltammetric wave was observed for the reversible deprotonation of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid. Results revealed that the reversible deprotonation of a surface-bound carboxylic produced a voltammetric response upon modification of the solution pH approximately equal to the pK1/2 of the monolayer.

Oxidative adsorption of n-alkanethiolates at mercury. Dependence of adsorption free energy on chain length

Article Abstract:

Research was conducted to examine the oxidative adsorption of n-alkanethiolates at mercury (Hg) in aqueous solutions containing 0.5 M NaOH. The oxidative adsorption is characterized by two voltammetric waves corresponding to the formation of energetically distinct low-density and high-density surface phases of Hg-SCn(sub c)H2n(sub c)+1. Results indicate that the observed chain-length dependence of delta-G(sub ads) is predominantly due to hydrophobic interactions.
