Segregation of chain ends is a weak contributor to increased mobility at free polymer surfaces
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to examine the effect of chain end segregation on the surface characteristics of thin films by comparing two different films formed by linear and cyclic polyethylene (PE) thin chains. The simulation of the PE thins films was conducted on a high coordination lattice which is developed by connecting every other site on a diamond lattice. Results demonstrate that both films experience similar increases in mobility in the interfacial region up to the point where the bulk density decreases to rho(sub B)/3.

Deuteron relaxation dispersion in aqueous colloidal silica
Article Abstract:
The field-cycling method was used to examine the deuteron relaxation dispersion in aqueous colloidal silica sols. Results showed that the dispersion is partly due to both silanol deuterons in rapid exchange with water and long-lived water molecules. The surface density, the orientational parameter of silanol deuterons and the rate constants for acid- and base-catalyzed silanol hydrogen exchange were also derived from the relaxation data.
