1,2-diacetals: a new opportunity for organic synthesis
Article Abstract:
This review discusses the primary diol protection and synthetic applications of 1,2-diacetals ranging from oligosaccharide chemistry to chiral memory reactions. The 1,2-diacetals are used either in the form of either crystalline cyclohexanone-1,2-diacetal or solid butane-1,2-diacetal. Recent studies indicate their use in the synthesis of natural products.

Carbanionic reactivity of the anomeric center in carbohydrates
Article Abstract:
This review focuses on compounds and reactions influenced by a carbon-metal bond at the anomeric center as applied mainly to the C-glycosyl derivatives and the glycals. Data indicate that these compounds serve as a rich source of chiral, nonracemic cyclic ethers and in the synthesis of biologically relevant compounds.

Ligands derived from carbohydrates for asymmetric catalysts
Article Abstract:
The use of carbohydrate derivative ligands in asymmetric catalysis on homogenous reactions is presented. The efficiency of the catalyst can be increased and the search for improved ligand systems would be greatly assisted by combinatorial screening methods.
