Chemical kinetics and thermodynamics of tin ionization in H2-O2-N2 flames and the proton affinity of SnO
Article Abstract:
A study has been carried out with the object of measuring the SnO proton affinity, the rate constant for chemi-ionization of SnO with H in reaction, and the SnOH+ electron-ion recombination coefficient. They were to be measured using a flame-ion mass spectrometer to sample flames in the 1820-2400 K range. At atmospheric pressure a small amount of tin, no more than 10 to the -6 mol fraction, was placed in five fuel-rich N2-O2-N2 flames. The flame was sampled along its axis through a nozzle into a mass spectrometer in order to sample ions. The rate constant for chemi-ionization could not be measured because impurities interfered, but the equilibrium constant for chemi-ionization/recombination was found.

The decarbonylation of ionized beta-hydroxypyruvic acid: the hydrogen-bridged radical cation (CH2=O...H...O=C-OH)super.+ studied by experiment and theory
Article Abstract:
Decarbonylation of ionized beta-hydroxypyruvic acid (HPA), which has interesting gas-phase ion chemistry, has been experimentally studied using tandem mass spectrometry. It has also been considered from the theoretical perspective. The hydrogen-bridged radical cation (CH2=O...H...O=C-OH)super.+ is of particular interest. Decarboxylation of the acid takes place via CH2-O(H)...H...O=C=Osuper.+. A higher-energy route is taken by the title H-bridged ion.
