In vitro selection of catalytic polynucleotides
Article Abstract:
A novel variety of catalytic RNAs and DNAs was generated through synthesis of mutagenized and random-sequence pools of RNA and were isolated through the use of repeated selective amplification. DNA has the ability to fold into defined configurations, while some can mimic the function of RNA and protein enzymes in the ability to mediate chemical catalysis. Chemical rate enhancements of both natural and artificial ribozymes can be substantial, suggesting that nucleic acids can make efficient catalysts.

Oxidative mechanisms involved in lignin degradation by white-rot fungi
Article Abstract:
This review elucidates different oxidative routes invovled in the white-rot fungi degradation of lignin with reference to the role of lignin and manganese peroxidases and laccase mediators. Authors also discuss environmental conditions, low molecular weight compounds, and gene regulation governing lignin degradation along with examples of model compounds oxidation.

Mycophenolic acid: a one hundred year odyssey from antibiotic to immunosuppressant
Article Abstract:
An historical account of the antibiotic/fungal metabolite development with particular attention to mycophenolic acid and its molecular target is presented. The evolution of the mycophenolic acid into one of the well known immunosuppressants in organ transplantation medicine and as a medication in the treatment of other ailments is discussed.
