Solubility of fluoranthene in organic nonelectrolyte solvents: comparison of observed versus predicted values based upon Mobile Order theory
Article Abstract:
Fluoranthene solubilities at 25.0 degrees Celsius when it is dissolved in 36 organic nonelectrolytic solvents with ether, ester, chloro, hydroxy, tert-butyl and methyl groups have been found experimentally. The data have been used to test the limitations and applications of expressions that come out of Mobile Order Theory. Computations show that Mobile Order theory gives fairly close estimates of the saturation mole fraction solubilities for the 28 solvents for which predictions could be made. For observed vs predicted values average absolute deviation of is 53%. The average absolute deviation is 1574% when the assumption that ideal solution behavior exists is made.

Mechanisms for the oxidation of secondary alcohols by dioxoruthenium(VI) complexes
Article Abstract:
Possible mechanisms for the oxidation of secondary alcohols by dioxoruthenium(VI) complexes have been valuated. The presence of an hydroxyl is not required, based on lack of any observable O-D isotope effect and ease of oxidation of ethers. Free-radical intermediates have been eliminated. Negative entropies of activation indicate a structured transition state. Two likely mechanisms were found.
