Synthesis of trans-2,3-dimethoxy-3-(phenylamino)flavanones and related compounds

Article Abstract:

A new kind of flavanone derivatives, trans-2,3-dimethoxy-3-(phenylamino)flavanones, have been synthesized from flavanones or 2'-hydroxychalcones in two steps. Analogs have also been synthesized. The first step is a condensation with nitrosobenzenes in an Ehrlich-Sachs reaction. The second is oxidation with (diacetoxydiodo)benzene in methanol. An important side reaction of the Ehrlich-Sachs reaction is nitrone formation. That is exploited to synthesize trans-2,3-dimethoxy-3-(phenylamino)flavanones using excess nitrosobenzene in aqueous methanol.

Total synthesis of (+/-)-9-deoxygoniopypyrone: application of the iodocyclofunctionalization reaction of alpha-allenic alcohol derivatives

Article Abstract:

The synthesis of (+/-)-9-deoxygoniopypyrone is described. This natural compound was isolated from the stem bark of Goniothalamus giganteus in 1990. The synthesis proceeds from alpha-allenic alcohol, which is iodinated and cyclized using I2 and Ag2CO3. A mixture of epoxides was created following reductive deiodination of the vinyl iodide and epoxidation of the resulting acetonide, but the threo diastereomer predominated.

Polyacrylic acid pore-filled microporous membranes and their use in membrane-mediated synthesis of nanocrystalline ferrihydrite

Article Abstract:

A composite cation-exchange membrane has been created that can be used to synthesize iron compounds. It was created by grafting acrylic acid onto a polypropylene microporous support. Treating this membrane with a ferrous ion solution resulted in iron uptake and subsequent oxidation at ph 14 yielded a superparamagnetic nanocrystalline form of ferrihydrite.
