The adsorption of bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)zinc(II) on Si(111)-7x7
Article Abstract:
Adsorption of two organometallic compounds, bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)zinc(II) (Zn(hfac)2) and bis(hexafluoroacetylacetonato)nickel(II) (Ni(hfac)2) on Si(111)-7x7 have been studied using both X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and scanning tunnelling microscopy. The Zn(hfac)2 is apparently adsorbed on the surface intact and seems to stay that way up to 300 K. There is a transition from the physisorbed to the chemisorbed state in the 160-300K range. Beyond that it is decomposed and the metal component diffuses away. The relatively nonvolatile Ni(hfac)2 would not adsorb on the surface because of decomposition in the vapor phase likely because higher temperatures are needed to cause it to evaporate.

An ab initio and neutron diffraction study of ammonium chloride
Article Abstract:
An ab initio and neutron diffraction study has been carried out on ammonium chloride. The octopole moment of the ammonium ion in the crystal has been estimated from the calculated electron density. It is about 10-20% greater than for the free ion and does not vary much with orientation of the ammonium ion in the lattice. No evidence of covalent interaction between the chloride and ammonium ions has been found.
