Battle of the online bookstores
Article Abstract:
Amazon.com, BarnesandNoble.com and Books.com are competing to dominate the online bookstore market. All three Internet bookstores have revealed price reductions, strategic alliances and litigation to help meet their respective goals. Books.com, most likely the least popular of the three, has been online the longest. The site features approximately 500,000 titles and promises US shipments within three to five business days. Amazon.com, however, claims to be the largest bookstore on earth. The site, like Books.com, features editor biographies and reviews along with its unique Eyes feature that sends users e-mail when books on desired subjects and authors are published. Barnes & Noble, which has filed suit against Amazon.com for its 'Biggest Bookstore' assertions, insists that it has the greatest selection of readily available titles. Barnes & Noble relies on Firefly Network's filtering technology to notify customers of new titles based on their customized preferences.

IAHC creates seven new domains to ease .com congestion
Article Abstract:
The Internet Ad Hoc Committee (IAHC) will introduce seven new top-level Internet domain names to relieve congestion in the .com domain. The new domains include .store, .arts, .web., .rec, .info, .firm and .nom and should be recognized by DNS servers by the end of 1997. Although .com was initially meant for international companies, it became the de facto domain for many US-based organizations. The resultant conflicts forced many companies to compromise on their Web site name. Law firms specializing in domain-name issues recommend that companies protect their identities by registering under all the domains that can be associated with their business. The IAHC draft does not prevent an organization from taking all additional domains in addition to .com, but this would undercut their original intent.

Net auctions are big bidness
Article Abstract:
Online auctions, which add a game element to buying, are luring growing numbers of buyers. Onsale (www.onsale.com) posted nearly $25 million in sales in 2nd qtr 1997, while First Auction (www.firstauction.com) and ISN's Computer Superstore are expected to jointly post $17 million in sales for the year. First Auction offers computers, software, consumer electronics, small appliances and other products that can be well described by simple text and graphics, but plans to offer airline and concert tickets. At Onsale, bidding runs from 3 pm to 1 pm the following day, with bidders notified by e-mail when their bids are surpassed. In contrast, First Auction's Flash Auctions last a scant hour.
