Electronic office tools are emerging so fast that managers are constantly tempted to wait for something better. Managers must reject this attitude if they are to stay competitively productive. If management recognizes the need for automation and puts the pressure on, vendors will supply the innovation and support that are sometimes lacking. Those who take advantage of the tools that are generated will have a more effective decision support system.

The office automation industry is bringing about astounding changes, while at the same time undergoing a change itself. The focus has been on constantly improved technology. This competitive race has often brought about a mixture of incompatible systems and autonomous, marginally-trained users producing questionable data. Now suppliers, users, and EDP managers must work together and stress the development of technology that fits user needs.

Purchasers of mini-computers for business use from retail outlets need to beware. The buyers may not be getting the support from the manufacturer that they are accustomed to receiving. Retail outlets need to educate and train their sales representatives more so they can provide broad support to the users of the equipment.
