Lap-Top Computers - What Potential Users Should Know
Article Abstract:
Most lap-top computers are used in ways similar to their desk-top counterparts. Applications include word processing, spreadsheet, database, graphics, communications, terminal emulation and access to dial-up data services. Users are beginning to integrate lap-tops in distributed processing systems that combine the portability of the lap-top with the power of a mini or mainframe located centrally. A comparison chart of lap-tops available as of December 1984 evaluates them on the basis of hardware, software, and system and networking support. Chief problems with the lap-tops are display quality, software availability, and compatibility with the installed base of the PCs, office systems, and larger data processing equipment back at the office.

News and User Guidelines: On Personal Computing
Article Abstract:
Although there has been some upheaval in the personal computer market, it is not yet a shakeout. Companies have failed because of poor strategy, or inability to keep up with the market. The IBM Personal Computer has become the standard and other companies have been successful with IBM-compatible products. 8-bit computers are becoming obsolete, and Apple must produce software and accessories that are IBM-compatible. There are four types of manufacturers: market leaders, market followers, market segment manufacturers and market defenders. AT&T is likely to produce personal computers that integrate with telephone systems and Japanese manufacturers will be producing less costly, standard models which operate with United States-made software.

On Personal Computing: Recent Advancements in IBM's PC Line Will Make the Company Stronger - and Perhaps Some Competitors as Well
Article Abstract:
Recent product announcements from IBM indicate changes in the personal computer industry. Technological advances are being made in the areas of operating systems, graphics, hardware, and applications software. Products such as Topview, the PC AT, and new graphics and major applications software show IBM's involvement in product development. It is believed, that in the future, operating system prices will increase and become divided into two versions (one for IBM mainframes, and one for users with no IBM mainframe or non-IBM mainframe). IBM is expected to strengthen its already strong position in the industry, and that strengthening may have a positive effect on some competitors.
