Nethics
Article Abstract:
The Internet, originally designed as a system for information exchange, is increasingly becoming a digital money-making machine focused on commerce disguised as entertainment and information. For example, a travel site is secretly sponsored by an airline and site which is supposed to provide medical information becomes a pharmaceutical company's advertising target. Children are also vulnerable to this trend in online marketing, with sites containing banner ads from major companies and advertising integrated into children's activities. Portals sell parts of their screen for millions of dollars, search results are sold and advertisers can buy 'key words' to make links to their product sites come up as first items in the search results list. There is only one way for Web sites to stay out of this ethical quagmire, namely, being direct about whatever is being done so that users of the sites will not feel abused.

Online advertising grows up
Article Abstract:
Currently, only about 0.2% of all advertising dollars, or just over $300 million, are spent on online advertising, but Jupiter Communications analysts expect this amount will climb to over $3 billion by the early years of the 21st century. Publishers and ad agencies suggest that companies evaluate online advertising not purely in terms of click-through rates, but as image-building that supports their product's overall brand identity. In future, standard banner ads will develop Java-based streaming, electronic commerce and other capabilities. In addition, online ads will be able to process transactions in real time, eventually managing electronic micro-payment programs, electronic coupons and other interactive incentive services.
