North, South, East, West: SkyMap will take you there

Article Abstract:

The Etak SkyMap global positioning system (GPS) receiver and software includes two CD-ROMS with maps of the lower 48 United States, a PC Card GPS receiver and a remote control. The system, with a suggested retail price of $299.95, turns a laptop computer into a portable navigation device, capable of pinpointing the user's location on the computer's screen. SkyMap, one of the first of a new generation of GPS systems, is usually accurate in finding the user's location, although the system will not operate indoors or in areas with many skyscrapers, and does not offer door-to-door directions for drivers. The device offers travelers an extensive database of restaurants, gas stations, banks, hotels, shopping centers, and tourist attractions. The device requires a minimum 486MHz processor, 20MB hard disk space, 8MB of RAM, and a VGA display. SkyMap is compatible with Windows 95 and Windows NT 4.0.

DVD-to-Go offers PC Card-based solution

Article Abstract:

Margi Systems' DVD to Go is a unique Type II PC Card that lets users play back DVD files, MPEG-2 video, Dolby AC-3 audio and CSS-encrypted media with broadcast-quality, full-screen, 30-fps video and surround sound. PC Cards have several major advantages over software implementations, particularly lower CPU utilization. DVD to Go sells for $349 and provides up to 20Mbps of video throughput to ensure smooth playback. Sound quality is better than that of CDs, and the video resolution is 720 by 480 with 16 million colors. DVD to Go can play not only DVD-ROM disks but DVD movies, which sell for about $25 each; there is even a Karaoke mode. Several major notebook vendors plan to offer DVD to Go as an option with their systems.
