This will be reflected through technological advancements in the following: electronic cash registers (ECR), point-of- sale terminals (POS), and electronic funds transfer (EFT). These developments will result in improved productivity and implementation of more comprehensive systems to penetrate smaller retailing operations.

A study, by International Resource Development Inc., indicates the increased use of voice-annotation capabilities in office communication and electronic filing systems. This technique is based upon compound document architecture, which uses the same techniques to handle data, voice text or image. Voice annotation systems are expected to be useful to executives. An estimated 13 million workstations or $8 billion in shipment is expected by 1994.
