The Government Office: 'Top-Down' Office Automation - Program Yields Results for Treasury Department

Article Abstract:

A committee of ten administrators in the United States Treasury Department selected a Digital Equipment System, when directed by Secretary Regan to design an office automation system. The system, implemented for Secretary Regan and others on down through the ranks, now supplies 150 executives with DECmate Workstations run on a VAX-11-780 computer. The system provides electronic mail for communication with other bureaus and White House offices, and a database for updated economic information. It is used for many tasks and projects such as coordinating the 1983 White House Conference on Productivity.

The Government Office: GSA Pilot Project Supports OA Use

Article Abstract:

A pilot project conducted by the Government Services Administration (GSA) involved fifty-three microcomputers and 200 GSA employee - users in automating 195 applications. The first year, increaseed productivity earned savings of $173,000 with $102,000 worth of hardware and software for the central office and $255,000 savings with $200,000 worth of equipment for regional offices. Information services were able to respond faster with more reliable data. Automated decision making was another benefit.
