The new storytellers
Article Abstract:
Digital storytelling is gaining favor with a number of high-tech players who believe it can revolutionize computer technology. Many of these advocates hold different ideas on how to bring the change to fruition. Purple Moon's Brenda Laurel has targeted girls with software games that emphasize narrative and plot lines. By contrast, many popular adolescent boys' games feature fast action and thin character development. Eastgate Systems since 1982 has appealed to a niche audience by focusing on interactive narrative technologies. The new media publisher recently added hypertext fiction titles and products in hopes of creating a dialogue between authors and readers. Opponents include Douglas TenNapel, a claymation game creator and pres of The Neverhood video game company. TenNapel believes that game play takes precedent over story, and that artists double as storytellers.

This Web site's for you
Article Abstract:
The practice of advertising alcohol and cigarettes using interactive Web advertisements has gotten the attention of the Center for Media Education (CME). The CME charges that the Web is very appealing because it boasts the youthful demographics so appealing to advertisers. It may be illegal to advertise actual cigarettes on the Web, so some firms simply sponsor Web sites instead of advertising directly. In addition, RJ Reynolds and other tobacco firms provide corporate data, and various private pro-smoking sites tout smokers' rights. Some advertising agencies hope that the advertising industry will move toward self-regulation by placing codes on sites. In addition, the FTC division of advertising is also implementing efforts to educate Web developers about legal issues. Some Web developers also have expressed concern about being associated with 'sin' products.

Anytime, anywhere learning
Article Abstract:
The Web has promoted new respect for distance learning (DL), as well as developing increased interest in computer-based training (CBT) supplemented with real-time instruction and online collaboration. Lifetime learning is now a reality and the Web offers 'anytime, anywhere learning.' Videotape and TV only send information in one direction, where the Web offers true communication and has changed DL technologies. The Web has also spawned the virtual university and the worldwide classroom. K-12 teachers are embracing the Web for group learning and team teaching, although corporate trainers have not yet embraced these concepts. Courseware developers are developing interactive courses and many universities are employing the Web for registration purposes.
