Article Abstract:
There is a brand of operating systems on the market known as Generic Operating Systems. Microcomputers can use one or more of these systems. Some microcomputers have the capability to support more than one system at the same time. The four generic systems are as follows: (1) UNIX, a multiprogramming, multitasking operating system; (2) CP-M, a hardware independent operating system; (3) PICK, a vertical memory operating system with emphasis on data base management; (4) OASIS, a multiuser database management operating system. A review of these systems appears in this article.

Manpower, Inc. of Milwaukee has developed a training package for its temporary-office employees called Skillcare. Skillcare can train a worker with basic typing skills to operate four word processors: IBM Displaywriter, Wang Model 5, Lanier No Problem, and Xerox 860. Each diskette training program leads the operator step by step through each function with screen prompts. To prove proficiency at the end, the operator produces a document. Manpower may offer the programs to customers.

The proliferation of software, particularly those packages that are integrated, has resulted in the publishing of software directories. PC Telemart, International Software Database and DIALOG are among the directories and data bases. The need for these services is borne out by statistics that show that on the average, computer owners spend over $1,000 on software.
