Voice Mail Delivers the Message
Article Abstract:
Seventy-five per cent of the time it takes more than one attempt to complete a business phone call. A solution is Voice Mail, the storing of analog speech digitally on hard disks, with the reconstruction of it upon delivery. Voice store-and-forward messaging alleviates problems with unwanted interruptions, time zone differences, errors in message relay, and confidentiality. A significant advancement came with Rolm's integration of its Phone Mail system with the Rolm Computer-Controlled Business Communications System. Commterm's Electronic Voice Exchange system's VSF 1000 model and VMX Inc.'s Voice Message Exchange system allow a user to send, receive, and transfer messages on any touch-tone phone. Voicenet connects VMX systems. Voicetek Corp. offers the economical VoiceStor-M stand-alone systems. Features of IBM's Audio Distribution System and Wang's Digital Voice Exchange, plus several others are given.

Surveying the LANscape
Article Abstract:
Lower costs have led to more choices and more confusion for users of local area network (LAN) communications technology. Firm standards have not been instituted. Controversy exists over the choice of baseband cable systems which transmit single signals and broadband frequencies which also allow audio and visual transmission. Baseband is more economical; broadband supports more users for longer distances. The architecture of LANs can be configured as a star with central processor, a ring, or a bus. Material can be carried by a string of bits called a token, passing around a ring, or by store and forward transmission with intelligent routing. Carrier Sense Multiple Access-Collision Detection is an alternative method. A chart comparing features of LAN systems is included.

Desktop Calculators: Versatility At the Right Price
Article Abstract:
Despite the widespread use of sophisticated office automation equipment, the desktop calculator is still an important part of the office. The hand-held calculator is not considered to be in competition with the microcomputer so the two can co-exist in the modern office; they are high technology partners. However, many calculator manufacturers are responding to user demand for simplified calculators. Consequently, they are priced very reasonably. A review of available calculators from various manufacturers is given.
