Getting the most from net operating losses
Article Abstract:
Manufactured home retailers and community owners are allowed to carry back a net operating loss (NOL) as a deduction against prior income under existing tax rules. The rule states that any unabsorbed loss can result in a refund of previously paid taxes or can be deducted from the income of succeeding years. However, the NOL rule also penalizes owners of manufactured home businesses under the provision contained in Section 382, limiting the use of tax credits and losses after an ownership change.

A saga of financing alternatives
Article Abstract:
Manufactured home retailers can turn to a number of financing options to suit their individual needs. Debt and equity capital are recommended when starting or expanding a business. Debt capital comes from borrowing while equity capital is obtained from the sale of stocks or investments by the current owners of the business. On the other hand, long-term financing is suggested for large purchases such as land and equipment. These come in the form of long-term loans, sale of bonds and equity funds.

Three business cheers for new tax act
Article Abstract:
The Small Business Job Protection Act, which is expected to be signed into law, will prove beneficial to small business owners. The law will increase the tax deductibles on the cost of new equipment acquisitions from $17,500 to $18,000 in 1997 and $25,000 by the year 2003. It also legalizes the treatment of workers as independent contractors and provides several key reforms on S corporation taxation.
