A smart place to live

Article Abstract:

Architect Frank Belien has designed an intelligent house which has been built, with the aid of sponsorship, in Brussels, Belgium. The intelligence is based on central computer control, which operates features including lighting, climate control and security systems. The climate control includes the operation of blinds, windows and radiators, whilst the security system includes an alarm triggered by the sound of breaking glass. The computer also records and responds to faults in appliances, and scans the barcode labels on waste packaging to generate a shopping list.

The government has promised to give 3 billion pounds sterling to New Deal Regeneration and 9 billion pounds sterling for social housing.

The aim is to reduce the risk of asthma sufferers having an attack by minimising the number of irritants in the home, as over 70% of asthma sufferers are sensitised to house dust mites. The house contains an integral vacuum system with a centrally located dust collection point, and a new Allergy Unit ventilation system.
