Alice on trial
Article Abstract:
Alice Coleman believed that her 20 million pounds sterling 'Design Improvement Controlled Experiment' at Ranwell East housing estate in London, England, in the early 1990s would bring significant benefits to residents. However, the redesign programme has had mixed results. The improvements have not, as she claimed, paid for themselves in the form of reduced running costs. The conversion of grassed and play areas to private gardens and car parking has meant that children now have very few places to play. However, eliminating high-level walkways and dark alleyways has cut crime.

A bridge between worlds
Article Abstract:
Sir Anthony Caro, seen as the UK's greatest living sculptor, is using his craft to bring the world of abstract art and the construction industry closer together. His latest project is the design of a foot bridge across the Thames linking the Tate Gallery of Modern Art and St Paul's Cathedral in London, England. The new Millenium Bridge was designed in conjunction with eminent architect Sir Norman Foster. Caro, aged 72, believes that abstract sculpture should be an integral part of architectural development.

Senior service
Article Abstract:
The 50-bed Newhaven Downs House Hospital for the elderly has been well received by both patients and workers. The patients particularly enjoy having their own rooms with toilet facilities and making use of the day resource centres. It caters for both frail and mentally infirm patients. The 3.4 million pounds sterling building was built from the South Downs Health National Health Service Trust. It was designed by Penoyre and Prasad who won the competition to build the hospital. The contract lasted 18 months.
