Walking on glass
Article Abstract:
Complex glass engineering techniques have been used in the construction of the 7.4 million pounds sterling National Glass Centre in Sunderland, England. Most noticeably, the building's glass roof is the first in the UK designed specifically to be walked on by the public. The building, which will open to the public on Jun 20, 1998, will have temporary and permanent exhibition areas, a working glass factory, shops, a cafe, workshops and two seminar rooms. Cost considerations have made it necessary to scale down the original design considerably, but the resulting building will still be impressive.

Surfing for success
Article Abstract:
Leading employers and recruitment agencies in the UK construction industry now advertise job vacancies on the Internet. Hays Montrose, possibly the largest agency in the UK for construction jobs, has seen strong interest in the website it set up in Jul 1998, but some observers believe that few people in construction are currently using the Internet to apply for jobs, although the Internet provides valuable general information about companies. The Internet generally complements existing employment advertising, rather than replacing it.
