Anti social housing
Article Abstract:
The UK government has been faced with considerable difficulties as it seeks to plan housing developments which contain a proportion of social housing. Local residents often object to social housing, believing that its presence could reduce the value of their own property, and particular difficulties arise when thorough consultation is not undertaken. In Sutton Coldfield, England, for example, there is strong opposition from local residents to plans to construct 500 new homes, a quarter of which will be designated for social housing. Local planners are keen to avoid clear social division in housing, with the poorest being confined to run-down inner city areas.

A tale of new cities
Article Abstract:
Some observers are hopeful the Regional Development Agencies will be more forceful in using compulsory purchase orders to ensure housing developments are permitted to go ahead. Private sector developers, Eagle Star, hope to build 9,000 houses at Micheldever, Hampshire, England, but are facing great opposition from local landowners. Eagle Star admit they plan to make a profit from the development. Some observers suggest the private sector should become more involved in building large developments particularly as the state does not plan to fund large scale house building in the future.

Prefab sprout
Article Abstract:
Japanese construction concern Kajima Corp has been working with UK prefabricated building producer Yorkon to develop an accommodation module which is set to be used by Peabody Trust for a 50-unit scheme in Hackney, London, England. Peabody Trust is turning to prefabricated buildings in an effort to achieve economies of scale in social housing, where there is a severe shortage of funds. Volumetric construction methods are already firmly established in Japan, where there is strong consumer demand.
