Social exclusion units
Article Abstract:
Social divisions are emerging in new housing in the UK, despite the governent's efforts to reduce social exclusion, according to campaign group Shelter. This group believes that more affordable homes and fewer executive homes should be constructed, and is calling for socially inclusive communities where there is a mix of housing, along with shops, schools and workplaces. Local authorities have allowed a lot of land to be used up for private housebuilding, leading to many areas having too much housing overall but insufficient housing to meet local need.

Tie me down
Article Abstract:
The TF2000 research programme, sponsored by the Building Research Establishment and the Timber Research and Development Association, is testing and verifying medium-rise timber-frame construction. This programme is monitoring a six-storey timber-frame building clad with vertically uninterrupted, single-leaf brickwork. It has already been established that the building is significantly stiffened by the brickwork, thus offering possible design economies for housebuilders.

Down memory lane
Article Abstract:
Mayfields residential home for the elderly in Ellesmere Port, England, was specifically designed to include features that will re-awaken the failing memories of its 36 residents. The 2.2 million pounds sterling home, developed by charity Methodist Homes for the Aged and a housing association and designed with dimentia in mind, is more spacious than normal and has good ventilation as a priority, because of the likelihood of incontinence among residents.
