Asphalt market fundamentals create tight supply

Article Abstract:

A roofing industry analyst noted that the asphalt market is an apt textbook example of the economic laws of supply and demand. Due to depressed 1999 winter inventories, demand for asphalt in summer has rocketed, leading to costly supply. Asphalt is a residual product of the refining process and different amounts of asphalt are produced from the refining of light versus heavy oil crude. Since oil refineries found it economically unattractive to process a lot of heavy crude oil during winter 1999, and a number of refineries merged operations, the impact on asphalt supply in 1st half 2000 is being felt.

The Asphalt Roofing Manufacturers Assn (ARMA) and the National Roofing Contractors Assn (NRCA) are in the midst of completing a new installation manual and training video on torch safety relating to the installation of modified bitumen roofing systems. Both organizations are also negotiating with suppliers to be able to develop work practice guidelines that would minimize blistering of some styrene butadiene styrene-based modified bitumen systems.
