Bertelsmann consolidates US media business

Bertelsmann AG is rebuilding itself around e-commerce. The policy is in line with CEO Thomas Middelhoff's goal of turning the German media giant into an American-European company. Most of its revenues for the 3rd qtr 2000 came from the US. The company has also concluded strategic alliances wth Terra/Lycos, America Online which would make Bertelsmann content available to 200 million users around the world.

Camelot is a Munich, Germany-based call center that ranks ninth in the country. It has 700 work stations and serves clients such as Bristol Myers. It is involved in bringing Internet convergence to the call center world. It belongs to the b.a.s. group which unites a number of media and communications companies. Most of its clients come from online banks, e- commerce and other financial services.

VW to increase purchases made online

Volkswagenwerk AG (VW) announced in May 2000 that it plans to increase purchases over the Internet using its own platform. To carry out the plan, the German automobile manufacturer has alloted $500 million on the Web. The products VW intend to purchase on the Web are estimated to be worth between $1.5 billion to $2.5 billion, which accounts for 10% of its total purchases.
