BPB pays out peace dividend
Article Abstract:
Plasterboard manufacturer, BPB Industries reports a 50% reduction in profits for the year to Mar, 92. However, the company is expected to regain its losses in the next year due to the ending of a price war in the European market. BPB has over half the plasterboard market in Britain, France and Germany and reports prices rising in all three countries. BPB plans to expand into eastern Germany and Czechoslovakia. It has reduced costs but has the capacity to grow in the expanding plasterboard market which it shares with Knauf and Lafarge Coppee.

Channel deadlock
Article Abstract:
Official arbitration between clients Eurotunnel and the 10 contractors which make up Transmanche Link over 1.45 billion pounds sterling in claims commences in Autumn 1993. The main mistake is that the contractors failed to estimate for the increase in the cost of fixed equipment when the contract was secured in the 80s. Eurotunnel needs a further 850 million pounds sterling to complete the tunnel. It has run out of finance, so the contractors will have to fund the 200 million pounds sterling shortfall until the arbitration results.

Brought to account
Article Abstract:
The Accounting Standards Board's new Financial Reporting Standard 3 (FRS3) will make company accounts easier to understand. The compulsory rules apply to accounts published after Jun 30, 1993, and should make interpretation of a company's financial position easier. Generally, building contractors favour the new standard because it excludes extraordinary items such write-offs. However, analysts believe that FRS3 will make forecasting interim profits for autumn 1993 more difficult.
