Ballast Wiltshier targets property PFI
Article Abstract:
Property-related private finance initiative (PFI) schemes will be the main focus of attention for Ballast Wiltshier, the UK unit of Dutch contractor Ballast Nedam. The company believes that it is wise not to be involved in too many areas at once, and has therefore decided to avoid all health-related schemes. It is currently bidding for a 400 million pounds sterling contract for department of social security offices in Newcastle-upon-Tyne, England, and a 60 million pounds residential training college for the Joint Services Command.

Forecasts stagnant for 1996
Article Abstract:
Construction output for the United Kingdom during 1996 is not expected to be much better than 1995, because although repair and maintenance construction work has increased, new work activity has dropped. The best prediction comes from Barclays economist Dr Richard Roberts, who predicts an overall 0.4% yearly increase. Construction Forecasting and Research, however, are predicting a fall in output by 1.5%, which will then be followed by an increase in 1997.

Industry fears 40 000 jobs carnage
Article Abstract:
There are good prospects for a housing-led recovery in the UK construction industry in 1996, according to environment secretary John Gummer. However, industry experts disagree with this view, claiming that up to 40,000 construction jobs will be lost in 1996 and that the industry will not start to recover until 1997. Construction output will fall by 1% in 1996, according to the Construction Industry Employers Council.
