Big change in store at Tesco

UK retailer Tesco has introduced continuity to its building programme by using a small number of contractors who are ensured work up to the year 2000. There are 7 contractors who work in partnership with Tesco to guarantee buildings are constructed to high specifications, costs are kept in line with budget agreements and builders maintain the brand name of the company. Tesco spends 500 million pounds sterling on construction projects each year. Mike Raycraft is in charge of Tesco's new building initiative and has become involved with the government's Construction Task Force.

Australian test team
Article Abstract:
A construction industry partnering project is being tested by the New South Wales state government in Australia. Each party sets a lkist of objectives such as completion date and financial targets, and agree to pursue the targets as a team. One of the trials involved the Australian subsidiary of John Mowlem Construction and reports on the project are so positive that the company wants to introduce the system to its UK operations.

To be included on approved lists construction firms must complete questionnaires requesting information such as banking details, equal opportunity policies, and evidence of competence. Approved lists are used by clients to streamline their tender process, and the DOE is aiming to create a central list to be used by all government departments. Government lists must be streamlined following recommendations in the Latham report
