Bobby McAlpine indignant
Article Abstract:
Contractor Alfred McAlpine was wrong to move out of the building sector, thus shedding 650 jobs, according to Bobby McAlpine, former chief executive and chairman of the company and grandson of its founder. He believes that shareholders and employees would have been in a better position if the company had accepted a takeover bid from Amec in Nov 1995. Alistair McAlpine, former director of Sir Robert McAlpine, feels that closing the building business was the right thing to do.

McAlpine profits from price hikes
Article Abstract:
Construction contractor Alfred McAlpine saw mixed financial performance in the first half of 1996. Overall pre-tax profit for the period was 1.6 million pounds sterling, from 100,000 pounds sterling in the year-earlier period. Its civil engineering operations returned to profit, but in the housing division operating profit fell by more than 60%. The company is beginning to benefit from an earlier decision to be more selective in bidding for work.

McAlpine staff bitter at closure
Article Abstract:
The decision by Alfred McAlpine to shut down its building operations has not caused great surprise among staff, who had for some time felt that their jobs were in danger. The move will lead to 650 redundancies. Earlier reorganisation of the division had already led to many staff being put on three months' notice.
