Bovis evades disabled rules
Article Abstract:
The disabled community in the UK has expressed strong opposition to moves by Bovis Homes which seem designed to allow the company to avoid constructing homes accessible for the disabled. The company has lodged initial notices with building control officers for more than 19,000 homes, around 10 years' output. It appears that it is making these applications at a very early stage in order to avoid complying with the new Part M of the Building Regulations, which will be implemented later in 1998. This provision states that housebuilders will have to provide wider doorways and hallways, among other features.

Turn in the cowboys
Article Abstract:
There are many dishonest practices taking place in the UK construction industry, and it would be impossible to eliminate them all. However, it is important to make a stand against companies which seem to be willing to flagrantly violate the law. In particular, cases where companies are making gross payments to subcontractors who claim to have self-employed status or are paying wages which are so low that workers also have to claim benefit in order to survive should be brought to the attention of the relevant authorities.

A revolution on the cards
Article Abstract:
The Subcontractors Tax Deduction Scheme, or the 714 scheme, which has been used for many years by the UK Inland Revenue to tax payments made to contractors and subcontractors in the construction industry, will come to an end on Jul 31, 1999. It is being replaced by the Construction Industry Scheme (CIS). Anyone with a construction industry business will be able to obtain a CIS4, a registration card for every worker who is self-employed in the construction industry. Stricter regulations will apply to CIS5 and CIS6 cards.
