Cash points
Article Abstract:
The 1997 Building/Hays Montrose wages study for employees in the UK construction industry found that salaries had increased on average by 3.5% which is about the same as the inflation rate. Some sectors of the industry are receiving larger pay awards, such as project planners, who can command annual salaries of around 50,00 pounds sterling. An industry observer suggests that young employees are demanding inflated salaries. Site managers on new housing developments are also experiencing increasing wages as the demand for new houses rises. Figures from 23 regional offices were collated.

Some kind of refuge
Article Abstract:
Many Kosovar refugees are facing the prospect of working for UK construction firms for paltry wages because they are being subcontracted through middlemen who act outside the law. The illegal employment practices are not being reported because the Kosovan refugees need to work and are too afraid to speak out. A lack of language ability and the undercover nature of the middlemen make it difficult to track down illegal workers and prosecute those who employ them.
