Article Abstract:
Some UK housing associations may challenge government plans to reduce public funding if they increase their rents. The associations point out little public money is likely to be invested in new public housing. They may try to involve the private sector in their housing development schemes. The Housing Corporation has ruled the associations should not increase rents by 1% more than inflation. Associations not following the rules will be refused all access to any type of public funding. Many of the residents of housing association properties are dependent on welfare benefits.
