A painful productivity gap
Article Abstract:
The boatbuilding industry has not shared with the overall increase in productivity for the US manufacturing industry, according to the CIT Group, the New Jersey-based floor-plan and retail lender. From 1992 to 1996, manufacturing productivity has grown annually at a rate of 3.6%, the fastest rate in more than a decade. In the boatbuilding industry, however, the real value added per production worker has declined to $28.20 in 1996 from $29 in 1992.
