Tom Kothman was appointed general manager of marine catalog retailer Defender Industries Inc after serving as its consultant. Initially, he was chosen to improve Defender's marine catalog operation. Kothman was named general manager when one of the sons of the firm's founder Sheldon Lance decided to return to his law career while another decided to focus on one segment of the business. Defender started as New York City Garment District fabric shop in 1938 and evolved into an international marine catalog operation.

Chris-Craft Boat Co of Sarasota, FL, has appointed Kimberly Bors as its new Pres and general manager in Aug 1999. The company, the oldest builder of recreational boats in the US at 125, decided to promote it former VP for human resources to the position that she has been holding in an interim capacity for the past eight months. Chris-Craft's decision was prompted by Bors' performance, which include a 50% increase in production, an increase in the company's work force and a backlog of boat orders.

Composites expert gives high grades to Genmar's VEC technology

Genmar Holdings Inc's Virtual Engineered Composites (VEC) process will contribute significantly to the boatbuilding industry, according to Bob Lacovera, the technical services director of the Composites Fabricators Assn. Lacovera describes VEC as a breakthrough in the hull construction process that enables a manufacturer to monitor as many as 600 data points. VEC was developed by Pyramid Operating Systems Inc of Greenville, PA, a company that Genmar is in the process of acquiring.
