Article Abstract:
The civil engineering agreement on wages in the UK has defined the hourly rate the four skills categories starting at 4.56 pounds sterling and going up to 5.36 pounds sterling. The cost of materials used in construction work have increased by below 2% during 1996-97 although some materials such as timber windows have increased in cost by 10%. Rates for ground work differ greatly according to the region and the type and location of a project. The price for civil engineering work increased by 2.4% during the second quarter of 1997.

Article Abstract:
UK construction industry tendering prices rose 6% from the fourth quarter of 1996 to the fourth quarter of 1997 and rises of 9% are predicted for some regions, such as Greater London, in 1998. Over 47% of builders claimed to be working at full capacity in Oct 1997, according to a construction industry survey. House building material costs rose 1.6% from Jan - Nov 1997, whilst construction material costs rose by 2%. The South of England is expected to see a tender price rise of 7% in 1998, compared to 6.5% in East Anglia.

The cost of common brickwork in half-brick-thick wall varied from 17.50 pounds sterling per square metre in London from Sept 1997 to Jan 1998, to 14.50 pounds sterling per square metre in East Anglia. The Retail Price Index rose by 2.4% from April 1997 to Jan 1998, while construction material costs rose by 0.2%. House building materials fell by 0.1% and mechanical engineering materials rose by 0.2%. Landscaping costs rose by 2.8% from April 1997 to Jan 1998.
