Dutch to fight plans for tough data protection law
Article Abstract:
The Dutch parliament is proposing stiffer privacy legislation for data protection. The new bill calls for mailing houses to be responsible for the data advertisers provide, among other things. The draft will also prohibit use of anything that looks like medical information in a database. The new law will not only oversee the direct marketing industry but will also impose punishment on any violations. The data registrar will act as the government's enforcer. C.J. Van Haaften, spokesman for DMSA, the Dutch direct marketing association, reveals that the group's self-regulation system served as a model for the EU directive. Haaften does not expect the Dutch parliament to take up the bill until October 1998.

The Web changes French DM agency operations
Article Abstract:
The emergence of the Internet has had a negative impact on French direct marketing agencies as their clients used the World Wide Web to look for help elsewhere. Direct marketing budgets were slashed as traditional ways of conducting a direct mail campaign were abandoned in favor of telemarketing. Those with a strong presence on the Web are management consultants such as Anderson and call centers such as American firm Convergys, which has invested heavily in databases and database mining.
