E-commerce challenges JCPenney, Ames

Article Abstract:

Retail chains JC Penney and Ames Department Stores are taking different approaches to electronic commerce. JC Penney has made its Internet operations an adjunct to its mail-order business, which allows both division to share services such as database, fulfillment and marketing. On the other hand, Ames does not have the size and brand recognition that JC Penney. Moreover, its customer base is made up of lower-middle-income women. Ames decided that the best way to tackle electronic marketing was to outsource all functions that need not be handle inhouse, including fulfillment.
