EC moves to cut Internet access costs
Article Abstract:
The European Commission has recommended a considerable reduction in Internet access costs by requiring member states to provide "full unbundled" access to local telephone loops by Dec 31. Competition commissioner Mario Monti and technology commissioner Erkki Lukanen presented the recommendation to "unbundle." Lukanen said the "last mile" was the most important to a user's home telephone was the major obstacle which currently prevents easy and affordable access to the Internet 24 hrs a day.

More Japanese consumers are getting connected to the Internet, creating more opportunities for direct marketers. Entrepreneurs are sprouting everywhere in Japan, attaching cyber-terms such as 'inter,' 'net' and 'web' to their company names. Moreover, Japanese women are beginning to see the utility of the Internet, a trend that can only mean good for online service providers as Japanese women hold the household purse.

Net advertising is moving mainstream
Article Abstract:
More marketers and advertisers are becoming more comfortable with the Internet as a selling medium. Increasing levels of Web ad spending and the growing popularity of electronic commerce underscore the growing importance of the Internet. Advertisers and marketers will eventually learn that the Web is best treated as a response medium even as, at present, 80% of all available ad impressions on the Web go unsold.
