EC standards prompt new sound tests
Article Abstract:
The European Commission's proposed sound and exhaust emission standards for the recreational craft have prompted industry groups to conduct pass- by sound tests on more than 20 boats. The tests aim to collect data from similar boat/engine combinations that will be used in determining whether boat designs will be able to meet a 75-decibel standard. The creation of an EU standard is expected to facilitate the establishment of a single standard for the US and Europe.

Industry prevails in suit challenging EPA air standards
Article Abstract:
Proposed federal air standards that could have led to banning of boating activities on designated ozone-alert days has been rejected by a three- judge panel of the US Court of Appeals. The ruling, issued on May 14, 1999, invalidated the air quality standards proposed by the Environmental Protection Agency and called its actions an 'unconstitutional exercise of power.' The decision has been hailed by the National Marine Manufacturers Assn.

A rebound in Japan
Article Abstract:
The attendance at the Tokyo International Boat Show in Feb 1999 is one good indication that the Japanese economy is on its way to recovery. At least 20 US-made boats were put on display and 18 US companies participated at the Tokyo show. The National Marine Manufacturers Assn, which has been a consistent Tokyo show participant, said that 1999 is a good time for US boat manufacturers to build a foundation for future business in Japan.
