Electric blight
Article Abstract:
Many modern office appliances radiate a magnetic field which can interfere with all types of equipment such as telecommunications through to hospital equipment. The European Union issued a directive in January 1996, which states all electrical equipment must be assessed for resistance and output to electromagnetic interference (EMI). Architects can reduce problems caused by EMI by siting electrical installations and offices containing electrical equipment away from power cables or railway lines, which are a major source of EMI. Nickel alloys can be used to encase electric cables.

Art of noise
Article Abstract:
UK acoustics consultant Jim Griffiths has been studying the impact of noise on venues since 1974, when he gained a degree from the Institute of Acoustics. His job is advising venues on sound insulation and the legal side of noise levels permitted for different kinds of events. Much of the summer is taken up with outdoor rock concerts which have to adhere to strict noise limits or face financial penalties totalling up to 10,000 pounds sterling. Griffiths' work has brought him into contact with many major rock bands during his career as sound adviser.
