thehut.com moves in on college crowd

Fingerhut Companies Inc. of Minnetonka, MN, recently introduced a new catalog that is being touted as the first general merchandise catalog for young adults. thehut.com, which is aimed at 18- to 24-year-olds, reportedly offers many of the trendy must-have items that young adults cannot order from other catalogs. The company conducted focus groups to decide what merchandise and what creative look and tone would best suit the age group. Fingerhut has dropped 700,000 copies of the new catalog, with 300,000 to existing customers and the rest to new ones. The retailer has also disseminated cards announcing the launch and lure prospects to request for thehut.com.

Mid America Designs, based in Effingham, IL, released its first Volkswagen catalog in spring of 1998. The initial Mid America Volkswagen catalog was sent to 125,000 people, whose names came from car magazine subscription lists and motor vehicle registration lists. The 68-page catalog, which was laid out horizontally and measured 8 inches by 10 1/2 inches, offers parts and accessories as well as merchandise related to air-cooled Volkswagens built between 1950 and 1979. Mid America intends to drop in September 1998 the second Volkswagen issue that will include a supplement dedicated to the new Beetle.
