An increasing number of marine manufacturers are requiring their dealers to install electronic dealer-access systems after experiencing the ease and efficiency of doing business online and seeing the minimal price of adopting the technology. Mercury Marine, for instance, has directed its top dealers to use MercNet and Midas when performing such transactions as ordering parts, filing warranty claims and checking product history.

Mercury outlines new strategy

Mercury Marine has outlined a three-pronged strategy to revitalize the sagging recreational marine industry. The strategy gives greater emphasis on product, service and branding changes. Specifically, 11 new four-stroke engines will be unveiled in 1999. However, a plan to sell Quicksilver parts and accessories through mass distribution channels was temporarily shelved due to opposition from dealers.
