Galliford: plain but still sailing

UK medium-sized building contractors Galliford is set to be one of the survivors of the recession. Profits for the year to Jun 1992 have decreased from 6.4 million pounds sterling to 3 million pounds sterling and turnover has been reduced from 225 million pounds sterling to 213 million pounds sterling. Specialist contracting has increased from 55,000 pounds sterling to 393,000 pounds sterling. Galliford's reorganisation programme has resulted in 150 redundancies. It aims to keep to existing activites and develop high margin contracts.

Aukett fights City sceptics

Auckett Associates is a multi-disciplinary practice of architects, structural engineers, planners and designers. In the six months to Mar 1992, it made a loss of 1.2 million pounds sterling. This follows a 1 million pounds profit in 1991. The group's shares have fallen to 4 pence from a price of 95 pence when Aukett was floated in 1988. Chmn, Michael Aukett claims the company is recovering. It can service its 3.2 million pound debt and has new commissions in Britain and the continent.

English China Clays chief exec, Andrew Teare is completing his term as president of the Building Material Producers and is now expected to concentrate on the expansion of his company. Teare has a background in building materials and is likely to continue to concentrate on English China Clays' core materials and industrial minerals businesses. He has reorganised the company in the 18 months since his appointment and is thought to be planning a large strategic takeover bid.
