Hard approach for hard times
Article Abstract:
The UK contractor John Laing's severe management techniques has resulted in its survival throughout the recession. About 3,500 staff have been made redundant since Jul 1991. Laing has focused on private sector projects and the fostering of European connections. It has just commenced a joint private project with a French firm GTM Entrepose on the 260 million pounds sterling Second Severn Crossing. Laing has won the largest building project in the UK; the 450 million pounds sterling Glaxo Stevenage complex. Construction operating profits are expected to be 19 million pounds sterling for FY 1992.

Making the right moves at McAlpine
Article Abstract:
Extensive reorganisation undertaken at leading contractor Alfred McAlpine by new chief executive Graeme Odgers has led to a recovery in the company's financial position. A number of non-core activities have been given up, staff numbers have been reduced and a rights issue launched to eliminate borrowings, but the company is not predicting an immediate return to profit, as there will still be problems with contracting activities. The fortunes of the company's core businesses are discussed.
