Hamar sandwich
Article Abstract:
The stadiums being built in Hamar and Lillehammer, both Norway, in 1993, for the 1994 Winter Olympics are bringing a new dimension to glulam engineering. Glulam beams are multilayered sandwiches of timber which are glued together. The Olympic Hall in Hamar has a 212-mt-long trussed roof beam with a span of 96.4 mt, which is said to be the largest span in the world. Hakons Hall in Lillehammer includes overlapping trusses giving a 6-mt-deep truss which can support snowfalls over 7 mt deep. The stadiums are being built by Moelven Limtre, producer of glulam beams.

Czechered future
Article Abstract:
British building firms have been investing in Czechoslovakia but the decision to split the country into two may affect plans for further involvement. The Czech general election in Jun 1992 resulted in the creation of two nations, Czechoslovakia and Slovenia. This has removed uncertainty for the population but may cause foreign investors to postpone projects. Most expect Czechoslovakia to continue to benefit from foreign funds as it has embraced a capitalist economy but Slovakia plans to retain a state economy and may lose foreign finance.

Sum like to hot: advances in computer simulation have uncovered an error in the standard CIBSE formulae for assessing the need for artificial cooling, which has forced designers to overspecify. A redraft is now being hurriedly prepared
Article Abstract:
There is increasing pressure on the Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE) to alter the design formulae in its guide, as the formulae has been found to be mathematically incorrect giving higher temperatures that are achieved in practice. The CIBSe is redrafting the section and a revised version is expected at the end of 1995.
