Home shopping: Poland, Romania
Article Abstract:
World Shopping Network Plc. in London, UK, intends to re-launch the company's home shopping programming in Poland in June 1998, and is preparing another home shopping operation in Romania. World Shopping suspended its programming in Poland in April 1998, due to problems with the company's management team based in Poland, according to Robert Blagman, a majority owner of World Shopping. The company is planning to invest approximately $2 million in the operation in Poland and expand the programming's audience to 3 million households in the first two years. Meanwhile, the planned operation in Romania would extend World Shopping's reach from Hungary, the Czech Republic and Slovakia. World Shopping is expected to have a total of eight distribution centers and 15 TV stations.

Viking set for PPR competition in France, looks to Japan, China
Article Abstract:
PPR is venturing into the already crowded French office supplies catalog market. While the company has considerable resources, PPR will need to turn in a high performance level to become successful in the market, said Irwin Helford, CEO of market player Viking. Helford noted that the French market already has more major and quality players per capita than any other European country. Another obstacle is the new socialist government under Prime Minister Lionel Jospin. PPR, nevertheless, is no stranger to success and to the French market as it owns La Redoute, France's biggest mail order house.
