Article Abstract:

Low standards and poor workmanship has consistently affected the public perception of housebuilders in the UK, with further damage done to their reputation by the end product resembling a series of ill-conceived boxes rather than a beautifully constructed house to be enjoyed and treasured. Architects and house builders need to work together to ensure the end product will stand the test of time and be something people wish to buy and are proud of.

The author comments on the social reaction to gobalization in architecture. The article opens with the idea of "ostalgia," coined in East Germany to describe their longing for the certainties of the old ways after reunification, followed by his comparison of such a mentality to the architectural designs, which aim to differentiate itself through traditional styles in a globalizing world.

The lack of colour and the drabness of London buildings are criticised. The use of bright colours by a few architects and the reaction of planners, builders and the public to a more colourful environment are explored.
